This database holds information on the presence and absence of composite monsters in the folklore of a sample of societies around the world. Composite monsters are composed of a mix of different anatomical forms like centaurs or griffins. We observed that they are documented all over the world, but not in every society. In fact, we can predict the presence of hybrid monsters by how concerned a society is with social divisions or how interested they are in distant cultures.
The data was collected from HRAF and other sources by Timothy Knowlton with help from the HRAF Summer Institute for Cross Cultural Anthropological Research (NSF Grant #2020156). The website was created by Seán Roberts.
